Bill Auberlen, Scott Tucker crash at Road America: You be the judge.

To me it looks like the BMW must have cut the LMPC rear left in the first contact and then slowed, I can't tell if the Porsche that was right behind the M3 had any kind of a role in this.

The other Rahal Letterman BMW M3 of Joey Hand and Dirk Müller went on to win GT though.

  1. Auberlen was indeed hit hard from the rear by the Lizard Porsche in that sequence. The No. 92 M3 is a write-off and the spare chassis will be prepared for Mosport starting late tonight at RLR.

  2. I thought so, even if the announcers did not pick that up. Looked like Bill was shaken up a little too, he got out of the car without disconnecting the steering wheel. Well a bad day for him but a good one for BMW/ RLR though!

  3. I would actually say it's the fault of the prototype. After the first slight contact, he seems to waver slightly and the back off to prevent a spin, so the M3 hits him.

A racing incident if I ever saw one.

  4. I think those LMPC cars need some more top end. There were a number of times during that race where LMPC and GT cars seemed to be tripping over each other.

Also congrats to Drayson, that Lola is absolutely lovely...

  5. seems like tucker suffered a puncture or some sort of damage to the suspension in the first contact then lost control and got hit again by the BMW.

    i quote the "racing accident"

also, the crash did not look to harsh but Auberlen looked seriously shaken!

  6. AC: BMW-RLR never removes the steering wheel. Not during driver changes or regular ingress / egress. It would only be removed in a dire emergency (this was not). The crash was much harder than shown by the wide-angle rooftop cam. Definitely knocked the wind out of Bill and he's one of the toughest drivers I know. It was severe enough to total the chassis; lots of energy. You can watch the buildup of the spare chassis at: http://www.facebook.com/BMWUSA?v=photos#!/album.php?aid=253720&id=309506851302
